PROGRAM: In the spirit of compassionate giving, three nonprofit organizations are collaborating to give $50 gift cards (from various retail stores) to financially-challenged cancer patients receiving treatment in the Anchorage area. Many cancer patients travel from outlying towns/villages to receive chemotherapy/radiation treatment in Anchorage. They may need assistance in a small way with food, gas, clothes, etc. This program will help to quickly address these needs without endless paperwork.
IDENTIFYING GIFT CARD RECIPIENTS: Members of the Denali Oncology Nursing Society (DONS) have agreed to serve as the “ambassadors” for the Compassionate Giving Program. As oncology nurses, they spend a fair amount of time with patients at the bedside/chairside and are able to determine fairly easily who is in financial need. Each of the nine DONS ambassadors will serve as the “point person” at various medical centers and hospitals in Anchorage. They will be entrusted with a certain number of $50 gift cards monthly to distribute at their discretion. To encourage anonymity plus accountability, nurses will be asked each month to fill out a simple record of giving (i.e. recipient’s initials, amount given and reason).
TO POST YOUR COMMENTS: Gift Card Recipients are encouraged to give feedback about their experience, needs, and wants on an attached BLOG. To help ensure confidentiality of identity, the BLOG will allow you to be anonymous. The feedback allows us to fine tune the program and give where the need is felt most.
